Here's a duh moment about Battlestar Galactica's Cylons: From Wikitionary for Scion: From Old French cion , ciun , cyon , sion ; cognate with French scion and Picard chion . [1] scion ( plural scions ) A descendant , a son or daughter. A detached shoot or twig containing buds from a woody plant, used in grafting . The heir to a throne . Cyon like Cylon. The child of humanity are the robots. Of course, the Glen A. Larson production of the 1970s didn't make out the Cylons to be the descendants of man, but the creation of an alien race.

Next Big Future has a cool post of the real impact of nuclear weapons. One thing, I took away from this article: the wave to nuclear threat peaked in 1960. I thought the stockpiles grew in the 1970s, but that appears to not be the case . The media hyped my imminent demise so much that my adolescence had a pall cast over it. Maybe this is why the collapse of local media has me thinking, "meh, if you didn't suck, you'd still be in business." After a half century of using fear to glue us to the TV, we're worn out.

Here's my take on NEXT week's Battlestar Galactica. I'd like to say this now and then quietly wait to see how it plays out. Here's what I think will happen for "Blood on the Scales": An immobilized Tigh and Adama are taken into custody. In a kangaroo court, Tigh is sentenced to death They grease Tigh to shock and dismay while Gaeta watches on. (What's the geek abbreviation for "major character killed"?) Lots of other stuff plays out (shooting, high drama, Apollo on Apollo action, etc.). Adama is about to be killed if everyone doesn't give up and surrender to will of Gaeta (I've never liked the weasel) Just then, the Cylon fleet jumps in (I'm thinking at the close of the third or fourth act). Galactica turtles and does nothing. Its faked communication chaos means the civilian fleet doesn't know what to do. Cylons board Galatica: Cavil's forces are coming with a surprise. Saul and Ellen Tigh arrive. Because they killed Saul whil...

This is why I love to edit stuff: take two VERY different shows-- one full a gripping tale of survival and brutality; the other about people in a paper company regional office. These two clips use editing and music to set most of the tone-- but swap the footage. The result is a amiable journey through space; and an operatic clerical world. vs.

I have been a geek of BSG since 1978. In the 80s, I winced at disco flashbacks. The new series took a while to grow on me; and now I love it. Another invention from the re-invention mill. But this one has super-cool potential: Todd McFarlane (Spawn) and Josh Olson (A History of Violence) have pitched an idea to Warner Brothers about a "revisionist" take on L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. Olson will write the screenplay and McFarlane will produce. Variety reports that they are still working out the tone. They want it to be "Harry Potter dark, not Se7en dark." The characters will all essentially be Baum's but Olson and McFarlane will be creating plots all their own. Olson also wants this new version to be more akin to Lord of the Rings and promises Dorothy will be more like "Ripley from Alien than some helpless singing girl." These are all very helpful illustrations as far as what they are trying to accomplish, but don't you just hate it when writers/people speak entirely in references?
