Sorry: We cannot accept your surrender

Image
There's a disturbing detail to the case of a double rapist, Jacob Tree. In Febuary 2004, he committed two rapes: the first in VicWest; the second on a Sunday morning at the Booster Juice in Cook Street Village. According to a report from CH News last night, Jacob Tree went to the Victoria police station several hours BEFORE he raped the woman at the Booster Juice. City of Victoria police did not accept his surrender because they didn't have a warrant for his arrest. Let me rephrase: A RAPIST TRIED TO TURN HIMSELF IN AFTER COMMITTING ONE RAPE HE WAS TURNED AWAY BY POLICE So, because there was no paperwork, Jacob Tree left the police station and within 24 hrs. raped another woman. I've said before: there is no column in the statistics for "prevented crimes." That's why police enforce the law rather than keep the peace.

I'm Begging You: Make Me Rich

So do you think that beggars in North America are the poorest among us? Think again. A report from the Straight Dope says that while some panhandlers are making $200/month; some are making as much as $200 A DAY. This from the article: I bet this won't surprise you, but estimates vary. As Michael S. Scott, the director of the Center for Problem-Oriented Policing, says in his online article "Panhandling": Estimates vary from a couple of dollars (U.S.) a day on the low end, to $20 to $50 a day in the mid-range, to about $300 a day on the high end. Women, especially those who have children with them, and panhandlers who appear to be disabled tend to receive more money. For this reason, some panhandlers pretend to be disabled and/or war veterans. Others use pets as a means of evoking sympathy from passersby. Panhandlers' regular donors can account for up to half their receipts. In a study of Toronto panhandlers conducted by Robit Bose and Stephen Hwang, panhandler...

A Comcast Technician Sleeping on my Couch

In the US, the technicians sleep. In Canada, HighSpeed technicians steal your food or implant Spyware.

Who Says Cable TV Sucks?

Well, I do. This clip simuataneously shows off that Cable TV sucks and it's worth watching. It's from the finale to MSNBC's Maury and Connie show. They met in the middle of his skank fest and her maudlin show of "serious" news. Given as evidence is a clip that shows that Maury and Connie have a lot more in common. This clip is kind of like those police chase videos or the footage of the guy who puts firecrackers in his mouth on a dare. Thanks for the memories, Connie. Oh, and if you think that this is a new turn for Connie: think again.

Quick Rebuttal

BC Ferries CEO, David Hahn said that his corporation offers World Class service. I agree that BC Ferries is on par with contemporaries around the world: Bangladesh Somalia Romania Malayasia Egypt Cambodia

ILM: The "M" Will Never Stand for "Models"

ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) has announced that it's selling off its model division ("physical unit") to an ILM staffer: Mark Anderson. The unit will be remonikered Kerner Optical, for its location in ILM's former headquarters on Kerner Avenue in San Rafael, Calif., and will focus on all physical production. Once spun off, Kerner Optical will pick up the slack by seeking work that ILM would not get. Kerner will become a preferred subcontractor for ILM. In the mid-late 1980s, Lucasfilm and ILM entered this dark era after the first three Star Wars films. They kept doing lots of work, but they seemed to miss the spark. Now, we're a year after the release of the Revenge of the Sith . Again, Lucasfilm and ILM are heading towards a slump. Their raison d'etre is Star Wars. Without the recent echo or the coming fury of a Star Wars movie, ILM just seems like another special effects house. I think the torch has crossed the Pacific. WETA Digital did the special effe...

100% Contagion, Disaster and Day-to-Day Life

On Victoria Day weekend, my daughter came down with a cold. It sucked, she was a trooper and she eventually got better. Then my nephew got sick, then my niece, then I got sick, then my Mom, then my wife. Two weeks after the Victoria Day weekend, four of us are sick. Two are well. Of the six people in question, 100% of them got sick. So far, that 100% contagion. My daughters fellow students haven't dropped like flies, so the 100% rating is limited to our extended family. It's a good thing that some diseases don't hit 100% contagion. The definition of disaster is when an organism is overwhelmed by circumstances. My wife and I lean on my Mom for the care of our daughter. With my Mom down for the count, we have to take care of our own child (egads, the thought of it). I lost two days of work this week. One day, I spent with my daughter; and one day, I took her to school at noon. The day at home was mellow and okay. The next day was the disaster. She was well enough to go to s...

All your Video Belong To Us

Has the popular Youtube.com has been hacked and all of the URLs now point to something that looks like this? It's such a media sweetheart it was probably only a matter of time before it got hacked. Details to follow about how and who did it. I'm not the only person to notice this. If you look at the source code, the comments seem to give away more detail: It reads: You have reached YouTube, the premier digital video repository on the Internet. We are currently working on the site. We'll be back soon...
